Background
Dean Brege began working for NOAA Fisheries in 1976 as a member of a team of biologists researching migration rates, timing and survival of seaward migrating salmon and steelhead smolts in the Columbia River system. During the first half of his career, he served as a NOAA certified scuba diver, and later, as a heavy equipment consultant. Dean earned both a B.S. and an M.S. from Michigan State University.
Current Research
Presently, Dean is a Project Leader for a series of studies involving fish guidance devices at Columbia River hydroelectric projects. He helps develop specialized gear and sampling techniques to evaluate ways to safely guide juvenile salmonids downriver past hydroelectric dams. His recent studies have concentrated on maximizing fish guidance into juvenile bypass systems at dams and evaluating how well fish respond to high-flow turbine intake environments at dams.
