Violence Against American Indian & Alaska Native Women: Program of Research

NIJ is actively developing a program of research on violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women. The project is also known as the National Baseline Study on Violence Against Indian Women. The research is mandated by Section 904 of Title IX of the Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005.

NIJ expects to fund researchers to conduct studies that will:

  1. Examine violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women in Indian Country.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of federal, state, tribal and local responses to violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women.
  3. Propose recommendations to increase effectiveness.

The scope of research is expected to cover domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and murder. Because of the broad scope and the complexity of the topic, NIJ has chosen to refer to the National Baseline Study as a program of research, rather than a single study.
