Celebrating Recovery Month

September 2007 marked SAMHSA’s 18th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and communities around the Nation commemorated the occasion with various events. Some events focused on youth substance use, while others focused on individuals and families.

At more than 600 events in all 50 states, people came together to celebrate recovery and to support loved ones by participating in 5-K walks, motorcycle rides, public forums, picnics, and health fairs.

In Sacramento, CA, approximately 5,000 people in support of recovery attended Recovery Happens! 2007 on the west steps of the State Capitol Building in early September. Attendees enjoyed a spirited kick-off rally, keynote speech, and meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous inside the State Capitol Building.

In Syracuse, NY, community members attended a candlelight vigil to remember those who have died from drug and alcohol addiction.
