African American women are less likely to receive care, and when they do receive it, are more likely to have received it late. For example, African American mothers were almost three times as likely to have late or no prenatal care compared to non-Hispanic White mothers in 2002. Hispanic women are not far off. When compared to non-Hispanic White women, Hispanic women are 2.5 times as likely to have late or no prenatal care.

African American women are less likely to receive care, and when they do receive it, are more likely to have received it late. Similarly, gynecological health care is more likely to be neglected by many minority women. Cervical cancer incidence rates are five times higher among Vietnamese American women than White women.

For all women 40 years of age and over, mammography exams are important and recommended tests, although underutilized among minority women. For American Indian women, approximately 47 percent had a mammogram between 1998 and 2000. Following low rates of mammograms among minority women are high rates of breast cancer among certain minority groups. African American women have the highest mortality rates from breast cancer than any other racial or ethnic group.
