B&W Y-12 Honors Small Businesses

B&W Y-12 honored several local small businesses at a Socioeconomic Program awards luncheon June 11. The awards recognize “stellar performance” by the small companies with which Y‑12 does business and recognizes Y‑12 employees who advocate working with small businesses.

Mary Harris of the Atlanta office of the Small Business Administration was the guest speaker. Harris outlined the services and programs through SBA to promote and support small businesses across the country. She noted that small businesses are an important part of the national economy. She applauded the role Y‑12 and other federal contractors play through their work with all types of small businesses.

Tom Vereb, the assistant manager for administration at the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y‑12 Site Office, also congratulated the award winners, adding that “whether it’s the NNSA or a large prime contractor or a small business, it takes everybody working together to get the job done.”

Eight small businesses and six B&W Y‑12 small-business advocates were recognized at the ceremony.

  • Sequatchie Concrete Services, South Pittsburg, Tenn., received the small business of the year award;
  • LeGacy-Critique, Nashville, received the small, disadvantaged business award;
  • Haselwood Enterprises, Oak Ridge, received the woman-owned small business award;
  • MicroCare Corporation of New Britain, Conn., received the veteran-owned small business award;
  • DCS Electronics, Maryville, received the 8(a) business award; South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, S.C., was recognized as the minority educational institution of the year;
  • Protection Strategies Inc., Arlington, Va., was honored as the service-disabled veteran-owned business of the year;
  • Wholesale Supply Group, Oak Ridge, received the AVID supplier of the year award; and
  • MS Technologies, Inc., Oak Ridge, was named the prot�g� of the year.

Small business advocate awards went to Bill Henegar and Tish Camp of B&W Y‑12 Procurement, while Brett Sullivan of Transformation and Projects and Charlie McLoughlin of Engineering received the program/users small business advocates awards.

Special small business advocate awards were presented to Brenda Hunter of B&W Y‑12 Internal Audit and Butch Clements of B&W Y‑12 Safeguards and Security. These awards are presented to Y‑12 employees who encourage and support working with small businesses.

B&W Y-12 operates the Y‑12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
