What Can We Learn from a Disaster?

Disasters provide an opportunity to learn many things that can help to reduce the impact of future events from many different types of hazards. After a significant event, FEMA may choose to collect and analyze a variety of information and data to learn more about the extent and type of damage that occurred, if projections about possible damage were accurate, and how well efforts to prevent damage actually performed. The information gathered is then used to develop advisories, construction recommendations, and guidance, such as maps that show the nature and extent of the damage. These materials serve to drive short- and long-term decisions about how to meet community needs and allocate resources, to provide options for rebuilding, and to ultimately reduce the cost and impact of future disasters.
