Dr. George F. Vande Woude was appointed Director of the Division of Basic Sciences at the National Cancer Institute in 1998. He was previously Scientific Advisor to the Director, National Cancer Institute, for Basic Sciences and Director of the ABL-Basic Research Program and Head, Molecular Oncology Section, at the NCI-Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center.

Dr. Vande Woude participates on scientific advisory boards for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Vincent T. Lombardi Cancer Research Center. Dr. Vande Woude is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Microbiology, and the American Association for Cancer Research. He serves as co-editor, with Dr. George Klein, of Advances in Cancer Research and was founding editor of Cell Growth and Differentiation. He has contributed more than 200 articles to the scientific literature.

Prior to assuming his position at the NCI-Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center, Dr. Vande Woude was Chief of the NCI Laboratory of Molecular Oncology.

Dr. Vande Woude is a graduate of Hofstra University and received both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University.
