U.S. Department Of Labor Announces $1.3 Million Grant to Assist Hurricane Katrina Evacuees in Oklahoma

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a grant of $1.3 million to the state of Oklahoma to provide employment assistance and training to Hurricane Katrina evacuees. The funds, awarded to the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, will assist approximately 531 evacuees statewide.

“Oklahomans have been very generous in helping Katrina survivors get on with their lives,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. “This $1.3 million grant will enable the state to provide job training and job placement so that they can rebuild careers and their lives.”

The grant will provide vocational training and job search assistance for evacuees looking to resettle. Additional services will include state and local efforts to disseminate information on how to access Unemployment Insurance (UI) and Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA).

“Gulf Coast citizens preparing for new careers and re-establishing stable lives need assistance,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. “Oklahoma will use this grant to help evacuees gain access to the training they need as they move past this trying chapter of their lives.”

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. To access the Katrina Recovery Job Connection, please visit http://www.jobsearch.org/katrinajobs or America's Job Bank at www.ajb.org.
