PNNL named to CIO 100
Lab honored for excellence in information technology management
PNNL's campus camera system improves safety, security and emergency response. Pole-mounted cameras utilize available electricity, while wireless mesh technology saved nearly $5 million in project costs.

CIO magazine has named the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to its 2008 list of the top 100 organizations worldwide that "exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology."
PNNL is the first national laboratory to receive CIO 100 honors in the competition's 21-year history.
The laboratory earned CIO 100 status for its implementation of the campus camera and emergency call station system. The system is designed to detect and prevent unauthorized activities on the PNNL campus. It consists of 81 cameras and 14 emergency call stations on a wireless mesh network. Use of wireless mesh technology saved an estimated $5 million, compared to a traditional wire-based approach.
"The campus camera system is a team accomplishment," said Laboratory Director Mike Kluse. "Our IT and security staffs partnered with vendors to build a virtual fence around the laboratory that enables PNNL researchers to concentrate on what they do best — develop and deploy science and technology that addresses big challenges in energy, the environment and national security."
The CIO 100 awards will be presented Aug. 26 at the CIO 100 Symposium in Colorado Springs. Other 2008 recipients include IBM, Hewlett Packard, Lockheed Martin and the Department of Homeland Security.
CIO 100 is the third award for the campus camera system. The laboratory also received a Hugi Award for technology infrastructure excellence from the Northwest Academic Computing Council and a GITEC Award for outstanding project management from the Government Information Technology Executive Council.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is a DOE Office of Science national laboratory where interdisciplinary teams advance science and technology and deliver solutions to America's most intractable problems in energy, national security and the environment. PNNL employs 4,000 staff, has an $855 million annual budget, and has been managed by Ohio-based Battelle since the lab's inception in 1965.
