PNNL to break ground on two new research facilities

Construction contractors will break ground later this week on two new, privately financed research facilities at the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus in north Richland. PNNL News Release - 06/09/08

Contract awarded for completion of PSF

PSF

The single largest contract ever awarded in PNNL's history, $106 million, was signed last week to complete construction of the Physical Sciences Facility. Construction of the buildings is expected to be completed in 2010. Full Story

Foundations being laid for Physical Sciences Facility

Under a nearly $14-million contract, Apollo Inc., of Kennewick has been pouring foundations and soon will erect structural steel for the PSF. To date, the construction contractor has placed concrete for the Ultra-Trace facility, the deep lab, the Radiation Detection building and is excavating the foundations for the Materials Science and Technology building. All of the buildings comprise the PSF. It will take about a year to complete the foundations and structural steel work. In total, Apollo will place approximately 8,000 cubic yards of concrete and erect approximately 1,400 tons of structural steel while working on the PSF.

First step taken on new facility

Capability Replacement Laboratory contractors began soil boring on the site of the proposed Physical Sciences Facility in the Horn Rapids Triangle in December. Soil boring is a pre-construction step needed to quantify soil conditions for seismic analysis, aquifer yield, subsurface investigations and bearing pressures, which are important for structural design.
