Blue-green water squeezesbetween England and France via the Strait of Dover in this true-colorTerra MODIS image acquired December 9th, 2002. The English Channel is onthe western side of the image and the North Sea is on the eastern, both ofwhich are mostly covered by low clouds. Most of southern England isfairly cloud-free, though London is partially obscured by a small bank oflow clouds. The higher resolutions of this image show London as a verylarge gray patch just under and to the left of the small gathering ofclouds. London sits on the inner reaches of the Thames River, whicheventually runs out to the southern reaches of the North Sea.

Across the Strait of Dover from England is continental Europe. France(lower left), is England’s closest continental neighbor, and isactually connected via the Channel Tunnel. The Tunnel runs for 31 totalmiles (24 underwater) at an average depth of 14 feet and as much as 246feet under the seabed. Immediately north of France is Belgium, farthernorth is the Netherlands, and beyond that is Germany. The small countrysandwiched between France, Belgium, and Germany is Luxembourg.
