On November 13, 1997, the President of the United States signed The Morris K. Udall Parkinson’s Disease Research Act of 1997 into law (P.L. 105-78), which directed the creation of research centers for Parkinson’s disease. NINDS funded eleven Morris K. Udall Centers for Excellence in Parkinson’s Disease Research through two initial Requests for Applications (RFAs) and now funds a total of 13 Centers plus a Parkinson’s Disease Data Organizing Center. NINDS initiated a full-scale process and outcome evaluation of this Centers program in 2004, following interest expressed by the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NANDS) Council and by the Parkinson’s disease patient community. NINDS and the NIH Division of Evaluation and Systematic Assessments, Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives funded this evaluation; links to the final reports from this project are provided below.
The final Data Report provides background information on the project, outlines the study questions and design, and offers detailed data and analyses
on the Udall Centers and a comparison group of Parkinson’s disease researchers. Staff from Booz Allen Hamilton, contracted
by the NINDS, developed the study methodology and conducted the data collection and analysis.

The final Recommendations Report outlines findings and recommendations made by a Working Group of the NANDS Council, based on primary data collected in the
evaluation and on the Data Report.
