The Oregon circuit board, semiconductor (microelectronics) and electrical components industry has undergone tremendous growth. In 1977, the industry contributed some $102 million to Oregon’s gross state product (GSP). In 1999, that contribution topped $12 billion. In 1999, these businesses accounted for over 27,000 employees or 11 percent of manufacturing employment in Oregon. Energy and water use in this industry is substantial. In 2001, the average age of semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Oregon was seven years old. On a worldwide basis this makes these facilities relatively energy efficient. However, energy and water efficiency opportunities still exist. The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), SEMATECH, and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance have collaborated to identify and standardize opportunities for efficiency in the tools and facilities used by the microelectronics industry.
