DATABASES

International Data Base (IDB)

The International Data Base, or IDB, is a computerized data bank containing statistical tables of demographic and socioeconomic data for all countries of the world. Most of the data in the IDB are obtained from censuses and surveys (population by age and sex, labor force, and population by marital status) or from administrative records (registered births and deaths). These reported data are entered for available years from 1950 to the present and, where possible, data are obtained by urban/rural residence. For the demographic data, the Census Bureau analyzes the data and produces consistent estimates of fertility, mortality, migration, and population. Based on these analyses, component population projections are made to the year 2050 based on assumed trends in fertility, mortality, and migration.

For additional information about the data base and its availability, see the International Data Base (IDB) information page, or write to the Information and Research Services Branch, IPC, at the address above.

HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base

Since 1987, the Health Studies Branch of IPC has been compiling HIV seroprevalence information for its HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base. We incorporate seroprevalence data for developing countries obtained from the international and regional conferences on AIDS and STDs and also regularly review all scientific literature for relevant information. Currently the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base contains about 25,000 individual data records drawn from over 3,200 publications and presentations.

The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base runs on microcomputers and is available in a Windows version on CD-ROM or on 3 1/2 inch diskettes. For more information about or to order the data base, write to the Health Studies Branch, IPC, at the above address.

The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base is also available for downloading via the Internet. The address is: http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/hivaidsn.html

MICROCOMPUTER APPLICATIONS

IPC has developed several software packages to assist in the planning, processing, and analysis of data from censuses and surveys.

Integrated Microcomputer Processing System (IMPS)

The Integrated Microcomputer Processing System (IMPS) is a primarily DOS based system that performs the major tasks in survey and census data processing. IMPS contains modules to perform:

IMPS is available for downloading from the Internet at: http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/imps.

For more information on IMPS, contact the Methodology and Software Development Branch, IPC, or e-mail to imps@census.gov.

Census and Survey Processing System (CSPro)

The Census and Survey Processing System (CSPro) is a Windows based system for survey and census data processing. CSPro contains modules to perform:

CSPro is available for downloading from the Internet at: http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/cspro.

For more information on CSPro, contact the Methodology and Software Development Branch, IPC, or e-mail to cspro@census.gov.

Population Analysis With Microcomputers

The Population Analysis with Microcomputers (PAM) is a two-volume publication. Volume I explains the concepts of the most frequently used demographic techniques for analyzing the following topics and refers to microcomputer programs for performing calculations:

Volume II presents documentation for the Population Analysis Spreadsheets (PAS) that includes instructions, examples, and graphics. It also contains documentation for the Rural/Urban Projection program (RUP).

Included with Volume II are diskettes containing the PAS spreadsheets in Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel formats. A diskette with the RUP program and associated files is also included.
