  01/11/08  2007 Corn Crop a Record Breaker, USDA Reports - Cotton, Rice Yields Hit All-Time Highs

The Crop Production 2007 Summary released today, contains year-end acreage, yield and production estimates for grains and hay; oilseeds; cotton, tobacco and sugar; dry beans, peas and lentils; and potatoes and miscellaneous crops. As expected, the report shows that the 2007 U.S. corn crop was one for the record books. Jeff Geuder, chief of NASS Crops Branch, looks at the highlights of the report.

12/18/07  The Census of Agriculture is Coming!

As families sit down to enjoy their holiday feasts this year, it’s important to remember the people who make those meals possible – the nation’s farmers and ranchers. NASS thanks these producers for their efforts and urges them to help ensure the future success of their operations – and their industry – by participating in the 2007 Census of Agriculture. 10/12/07  NASS Releases Latest Look at U.S. Crops

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released the October Crop Production report providing the latest look at U.S. crops, including corn, soybeans, cotton and citrus. The corn crop is expected to yield an average 154.7 bushels per acre – the second highest on record. Steve Wiyatt, director of the NASS Statistics Division, says the surprise however is in sunflower production which is forecasted at 2.9-billion pounds, 35 percent higher than last year.

09/12/07  NASS Forecasts An Even Bigger Record Corn Crop

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is still expecting a record corn crop. After forecasting a whopping 13.1-billion bushel crop in August - the much anticipated September Crop Production report shows a two-percent increase to 13.3-billion bushels. Jeff Geuder, chief of the NASS Crops Branch, says the September report provides the best look so far at the season’s crops, including corn, soybeans and cotton.

08/10/07  NASS Forecasts Record Corn Crop in 2007

NASS's Crop Production report, released today, contains the first official estimates for 2007 production of major crops, including corn, soybeans and cotton. Corn production is forecast at a record 13.1 billion bushels, eclipsing the previous record, set in 2004, by 10.6 percent. Jeff Geuder, chief of the NASS Crops Branch, reviews the highlights of the report.

  03/09/07  January Freeze Had Significant Impact on California Citrus

As a result of freezing temperatures that hit California in mid-January, NASS has reduced its forecasts for 2006-07 orange, grapefruit, tangerine and lemon production in the state. Jeff Geuder, chief of the NASS Crops Branch, tells the story.

1/03/07  Cattle Survey is USDA’s Largest Livestock Survey of the Year

The January Cattle Survey, NASS’s largest livestock survey of the year, is underway. Over the next two weeks, the agency will contact some 50,000 cattle operations in 48 states as part of its effort to measure and track trends in the industry. Dan Kerestes, chief of the NASS Livestock Branch, discusses the importance of producer participation in the Cattle Survey.

12/11/2006  December Crop Report Provides Outlook for Corn, Orange Crops

The latest Crop Production report shows cotton virtually unchanged from the November forecast but down 11 percent from last year's record production. The U.S. all orange forecast for the 2006-07 season is up 3 percent from the October forecast but down 9 percent from last season's final utilization. Jeff Geuder, chief of the NASS Crops Branch, looks at the numbers.

11/09/2006  November Crop Report Shows Smaller Corn Crop, Bigger Soybean and Cotton Crops

In the latest Crop Production report, NASS reduced its estimate of U.S. corn harvest by one percent – to just over 10.7 billion bushels. Meanwhile, the soybean and cotton crops are coming in slightly above last month’s estimates. Greg Thessen, head of the NASS Field Crops Section, discusses highlights of the report.

10/12/2006  Crop Report Shows Soybean and Cotton Production Up and Corn Production Down from September

Production estimates for soybeans and cotton are up from September while the production forecast for corn is down, according to NASS’s October Crop Production report. Steve Wiyatt, director of the NASS Statistics Division, says that early harvest results for corn have revealed that the hot, dry conditions of the summer had more of an impact on yield potential than anticipated.

10/02/06  Latest Aquaculture Census Shows U.S. Aquaculture a Billion Dollar Industry

The 2005 Census of Aquaculture provides the second nationwide count of the aquaculture industry. Dan Kerestes, chief of the NASS Livestock Branch, says that sales of aquaculture products have grown to nearly $1.1 billion since 1998, an increase of 11.7 percent. Accounting for more than half of all aquaculture sales was food fish, including catfish, perch, salmon, tilapia and trout.

09/29/06  NASS Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report Shows U.S. Hog Inventory on the Rise

U.S. hog inventory is up from a year ago at 62.7 million head, according to NASS’s Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report. Dan Kerestes, chief of the NASS Livestock Branch, says genetics and prices are likely factors for the rising numbers.

07/13/06  July Crop Report Looks at Winter, Spring Wheat Production

NASS’s July Crop Production Report provides the third look at 2006 winter wheat production and the first look at the spring wheat crop. Greg Thessen, head of the NASS Field Crops Section, says that while farmers are finding better crops than originally expected, the wheat numbers are still well below 2005.

06/30/06  Biotech Corn, Cotton Acres Increase More than Soybean Acres

Part of the annual Acreage Report released June 30th looks at U.S. biotech acres. Steve Wiyatt, director of NASS's statistics division, says the percentage of corn, cotton and soybean acres increased this year by 9 percent - 4 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

06/30/06  USDA Grain Stocks Report Shows Record Year-to-Date Corn Disappearance

Steve Wiyatt, Director of NASS's Statistics Division, discusses highlights of USDA's quarterly Grain Stocks report. He says a highlight of the report show year-to-date disappearance of corn is a record at 8.86-billion bushels. But Wiyatt says the March-May wheat disappearance of 404-million bushels - down 9 percent - may have come as a surprise to industry watchers. And he says soybean stocks of 990-million bushels represented a 42 percent increase over 2005 - and the highest June 1st soybean stocks level ever.

  6/30/06  USDA Acreage Report Finds More Corn, Cotton and Wheat Acres than March

Steve Wiyatt, Director of NASS's Statistics Division, discusses highlights of USDA's annual Acreage Report. He says farmers may have planted two percent more corn acres than indicated in March due to strong demand and  firm prices. And Wiyatt says a seven percent increase in cotton planted area may not necessarily translate into a big increase in cotton production this year. He also says both barley and sorghum planted areas are the lowest since NASS began keeping records.

06/12/06  NASS Takes Local Approach on Surveys

NASS is collecting data right now that will be used to generate several important reports due out at the end of the month. While some farmers fill out a survey form on paper or on line, many others will receive a phone call or in-person visit from a local interviewer, who may well be a fellow farmer. The local surveyors, who are called enumerators, are provided to NASS through a cooperative agreement with the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. Iowa enumerators Alan Tomlinson, who farms himself, and Connie Merkey, a farm spouse with an active role her family’s operation, talk about the importance of the surveys they conduct for NASS.

06/09/06  June Crop Production Report Shows Winter Wheat Down, Oranges Unchanged

06/02/06  NASS Mid-Year Surveys Will Yield Vital Data

NASS data collection specialists are currently in the field, gathering information from producers on everything from crop acres planted, to grain in storage, to hog and pig inventories. Bob Bass, director of NASS’s Census and Survey Division, explains that the data collected between now and mid-month will be published June 30 in a series of major reports providing the first clear indication of potential production and supply of major commodities for 2006.
