Father's Day, 2002: June 16

Number of fathers in 2000 who were part of married-couple families with own children under 18.

Among these --

-- 22 percent were raising three or more of their own children.

-- 9 percent were raising their own infants under age 1.

-- 12 percent were under age 30.

-- 1 percent were 65 or over.

-- 2 percent lived in the home of a relative or a nonrelative.

-- 61 percent had an annual family income of $50,000 or more.

Number of single fathers in 2000, up from 393,000 in 1970. There was roughly one single father for every five single mothers in 2000, compared with about one for every nine in 1970.

Among these fathers --

-- 10 percent were raising three or more of their own children under 18.

-- 45 percent were divorced; 34 percent had never married; 17 percent were married with an absent spouse; and 4 percent were widowed.

-- 10 percent were raising their own infants under age 1.

-- 22 percent were under 30.

-- 1 percent were 65 or over.

-- 13 percent lived in the home of a relative or a nonrelative.

-- 24 percent had an annual family income of $50,000 or more.

Child Support

Neckties have long been one of the most popular Father's Day gifts. To buy dad a tie, a good place to visit might be one of the 10,700 men's clothing stores as of 2000.
