Funding Opportunity Type Descriptions

PA
Program Announcement - NIH announcement requesting grant application in stated scientific areas (unless a Parent PA). Generally money is not set aside to pay for grants.

Institutes publish PAs in the NIH Guide and in Grants.gov as funding opportunity announcements.

PAR
Program announcement soliciting applications that are reviewed in an NIH institute.

PAS
Program announcement with set-aside funds. A set-aside is monies budgeted for a defined purpose in a fiscal year.

RFA
Request for Applications - Initiative sponsored by one or more NIH institute or center that stimulates research by requesting grant applications in a well-defined scientific area. RFAs have a single application receipt date and identify funds set aside and the number of awards likely to be made.

RFAs are published in the NIH Guide and in Grants.gov as funding opportunity announcements.

RFP
Request for Proposals - Initiative sponsored by an NIH institute that requests proposals for a contract to meet a specific need, such as the development of an animal model. RFPs have a single proposal receipt date.
