This section provides self-reported data on preventive services' use from various questionnaires and surveys administered by CMS. The Downloads below include: - Beneficiary self-reported data from the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers Survey (CAHPS) regarding the use of influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccinations. Data are presented by nation, state, and geographic unit for people in both fee-for-service and managed care for the years 2000 through 2004.
- Beneficiary self-reported data on the use of various preventive services from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) for fee-for-service and managed care respondents by race and ethnicity (e.g., Caucasian, Hispanic, African American).
- Beneficiary self-reported data on the characteristics of Medicare beneficiaries 65 and over who live in the community and have diabetes from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS).
There are links below to more information on the Consumer Assessment of Health Plan Satisfaction and the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, as well as the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey, which CMS administers to Medicare managed care enrollees. There is also a link to the National Center for Health Statistics Trends in Health and Aging Warehouse, which provides information on the use of preventive services and health behaviors gathered from various surveys administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other information on the health of older adults. As mentioned in the "Overview" section of this website, several data sources provide information on the use of preventive services. Each source has its limitations. We recommend reading the "Data User's Guide" in the Downloads section below to understand the advantages and disadvantages of these different data sources in examining utilization rates for preventive services.
