Newport research program is part of Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center, and serves as a hub for collaborative research between government and university scientists. Some major areas of study include surveying stocks of Pacific groundfish, identifying essential fish habitat, investigating fish disease and studying the links between the ocean food web and global climate change. Newport also has a special laboratory for the study of fish immunology.
