In late August 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured these images of Colorado (east) and Utah (west) and a few scattered fires (red dots or outlines) burning there. In the image from August 17, large smoke plumes can be seen wafting eastward from the fires in northern Colorado.
