Weekly Report of Selected Assets

Description: This report collects weekly data on the outstanding amount of selected loans, securities, total assets, and borrowings from a sample of smaller U.S. commercial banks.

OMB: 7100-0075

Purpose: Data from this report, together with data from the Weekly Report of Assets and Liabilities for Large Banks (FR 2416) and the Weekly Report of Assets and Liabilities for Large U.S. Branches and Agencies of Foreign Banks (FR 2069), are used to construct estimates of bank credit, sources and uses of bank funds, and a balance sheet for the entire banking system. These statistics are used to analyze current banking and monetary conditions.

Background: This report originated as the monthly FR 635 in January 1946. Over the years, the report has undergone numerous revisions in response to changes in economic and banking conditions, regulations, and economic policy. Its reporting frequency was increased to weekly in 1969 for accurate and timely construction of the key series used to analyze current banking developments. Its current format has been largely maintained since 1984, while adding further details from time to time.

Respondent Panel: The panel consists of a random stratified sample of about 1,100 U.S. commercial banks that do not report on the FR 2416 report filed by larger banks. Participation is voluntary.

Frequency: Weekly, as of the close of business each Wednesday, providing for accurate and timely construction of the key series used to analyze current banking developments.

Public Release: Aggregate data are published in the weekly Assets and Liabilities of Commercial Banks in the United States (H.8) statistical release (http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/) and in the Federal Reserve Bulletin. Microdata are confidential.
