Business Volume and Customers

Our business volume was $761 million. Customers included the U.S. Department of Energy and other federal, state and local agencies; universities; and industry sponsors.

Awards

PNNL received three R&D 100 Awards in FY 2007 for a total of 74; and 2 Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) awards for technology transfer, for a total of 64.

PNNL staff have also been recognized with the following:

  • 1 Coblentz Award
  • 4 Discover Magazine Awards
  • 3 PECASE (Presidential Early Career award for Scientists and Engineers) Awards.

Patents

In fiscal year 2007, PNNL received 39 U.S. and 52 foreign patents. Since 1965, PNNL has received a total of 1,557 U.S. and foreign patents.

Employment, Payroll and Taxes

Staff employment at the end of FY 2007 was 4,008. The gross payroll for the year was approximately $334 million. Employer-paid benefits totaled $90.8 million and various state and federal payroll taxes paid by the Laboratory amounted to more than $25.3 million.

The Laboratory also paid:

  • $2.7 million in business and occupation taxes
  • $977,000 in sales and use taxes
  • $905,000 in property and leasehold taxes.

Purchased Goods and Services

PNNL purchased goods and services totaling more than $278 million.

Economic Development

PNNL's economic development programs has helped hundreds of technology businesses develop products, acquire new customers and contracts, get access to funding sources and strategic partners, and secure specialized facilities and staff. The Economic Development Office won the national 2007 Tibbett's Award for its SBIR Alerting Service, a first-of-its-kind, e-mail newsletter that provides more than 3,500 subscribers bi-weekly summaries of current information on available Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding, associated workshops, conferences, and proposal-writing tips. EDO also leads the Laboratory's involvement in the development of the Tri-Cities Research District, a 1,600-acre area surrounding PNNL's campus planned to attract technology businesses to the area.
