When one thinks about or imagines the oceans and Great Lakes, an expansive blue horizon is often the image emerges. It is also often said that we know more about the backside of the moon than we do of the ocean floor. The advanced, in situ technologies provided by NURP allow scientists and educators the unique opportunity to travel below that blue horizon to view the beauty, immensity and diversity of the world’s oceans and Great Lakes. Scientists who utilize the in situ approach to their studies have developed analogues to compare this approach to more conventional oceanographic techniques. One analog poses the scenario of an alien arriving in orbit over earth, hovering above the clouds, and sending down an arm to grab a piece of earth…imagine that piece of earth were New York city…how complete would our alien’s understanding be of the city as she hoisted a piece of Central Park, a hot dog stand, a taxi back to her spaceship? Only by traveling along the streets and pathways, visiting the shops and sidewalks does one begin to comprehend the complex components and interactions that make up the city.

NURC-NA&GL’s Education and Outreach programs are designed to greatly add value to its underwater research program, by bringing the underwater world to educators, managers and the general public.
