AUSTIN, Texas -- In response to the needs of people and communities affected by Hurricane Ike, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Texas Governor's Division of Emergency Management (TXGDEM) will open an Area Field Office (AFO) in Houston. This office will support the Joint Field Office already established in Austin and will be the forward command center to manage operations close to the disaster area. Other AFOs may be announced shortly.

Along with the AFOs, Joint Task Force Ike continues to assist the State of Texas on Galveston Island and other disaster locations, helping with Search and Rescue and supporting local government response activities.

FEMA staff and its federal partners are in Texas to support emergency activities such as search and rescue, commodities distribution, power restoration, debris clearance, and will provide longer term federal assistance to homeowners, renters and business owners to help recover from Hurricane Ike.

Detailed information about this disaster and the recovery process also is available online at www.fema.gov or www.txdps.state.tx.us/dem.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
