FEMA Statement On Disaster Housing In Florida Following Tropical Storm Fay

Release Date: August 27, 2008
Release Number: FNF-08-074

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received inquiries from Members of Congress on the Disaster Housing Plan for residents displaced by Tropical Storm Fay.

On August 24, 2008 President Bush issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Florida, triggering the release of federal funds to help communities recover from the affects of Tropical Storm Fay.  On August 25, 2008 the declaration was amended to provide Individual Assistance to residents of Brevard County.  On August 26, 2008, Volusia, Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Hendry counties were added to the list approved for Individual Assistance.

Disaster housing assistance is provided in accordance with the 2008 Disaster Housing Plan released in June 2008.  The plan reinforces a strong commitment to support local officials with housing assistance as requested, and emphasizes the use of a broad range of interim housing solutions as well as other innovative options.  State-led Housing Solutions Task Forces will evaluate housing requirements, identify potential solutions, and develop a coordinated plan for delivering necessary assistance in a timely and cost-effective manner.

FEMA's approach is to provide safe, flexible interim housing assistance that can be adjusted to the range of requirements as a result of a disaster, and with the objective of helping victims to quickly return to their homes or locate other permanent housing.

More information on the 2008 Disaster Housing Plan and on the long-term goals of the National Disaster Housing Strategy is available at www.FEMA.gov.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
