AG Bell Files Comments on Proposed Rule Changes to ADA
On August 18, AG Bell filed comments to proposed rule changes to Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Department of Justice requested comments to these sections pertaining to communications access to stadium events; movie captioning; availability of interpretive services (including oral interpreters) at hosptials; communications access and emergency response at hotels and motels; high-tech communications services; and much more. With the assistance of the Law and Advocacy Center of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), AG Bell joined NAD, the Hearing Loss Association of America, Telecommunications for the Deaf, Inc., and many other hearing loss groups and individuals in filing comments in response to these important issues. Congresswoman Berkley Pledges to Fight for Hearing Aid Tax Credit
On Saturday, August 16, a capacity crowd of 120 Las Vegas residents gathered to thank Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV) for her co-sponsorship of the federal Hearing Aid Tax Credit (HR 2329) and to urge her to champion the bill in the House of Representatives. Rep. Berkley is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee that determines the fate of tax legislation, and she pledged to fight for passage of the tax credit to help offset some of the cost of hearing aids for dependents under 18 and people over 55 years old.

Rep. Berkley was introduced at the event by Nevada State Senator Terry Care who championed the state’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention legislation. The meeting also attracted the attention of the Las Vegas FOX-TV affiliate which filmed an interview with Rep. Berkley.

Special thanks go to the Nevada Chapter of AG Bell, which organized the event, particularly Chapter co-presidents Arnie and Corrine Altman. Click here to see a photo.
