Instructions for using Web Eyes® Plug-in

Before you begin

You will need the following browser and equipment to successfully download Web Eyes®:

• An Internet connection,

• Four megabytes of free space available on your hard drive, and

• Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser version 5.5 or higher. We recommend version 6.0 if you have Windows 2000. (Web Eyes® does NOT work with AOL or Netscape. Firefox includes text enlargement software.)

  Note: To find what version of Internet Explorer you have, click on the Help button on your browser's menu bar, and then choose “About Internet Explorer.” The window that opens will tell you which version you have.

If you need a newer version of Internet Explorer, go to www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp for a free upgrade.

How to install Web Eyes®

1. Print these instructions, then close everything except this Internet Explorer™ window and your Internet connection.

2. Select one of the “Download Web Eyes®” links below.

   • Web Eyes plugin (WebEyesFree_setup.exe) or
   • Windows NT Users Web Eyes plugin (WebEyesFree_setup_NT.exe)

3. When a box opens, choose “Save” to download Web Eyes®. (Do NOT choose “Install.”) Download the program to your desktop or enter another address on your hard drive where you want the program stored.

4. Close Internet Explorer and go to the place where you saved the program. Double-click on the setup.exe file to start installing Web Eyes.

5. When the Web Eyes Install Shield Wizard has opened, select the "next>" button and follow the installation instructions.

   Result: The Web Eyes® browser plug-in and Help Manual will be installed on your hard drive and your copy of Internet Explorer.

6. Open Internet Explorer again. "Help Manual" text will appear that explains how to use Web Eyes® to enlarge the text in your browser and points out where the "On/Off" menu is.

   Note: The "Help Manual" text only appears automatically the first time you open the browser. If you need to read it again, go to the "Help" icon on the Web Eyes toolbar.

7. Go back to Social Security Online. Change the "On/Off" menu from "Off" to "On" to magnify the Social Security Online text.

How to use Web Eyes

Go to Social Security Online. At the top of the browser window, on the menu bar, you will see a toolbar with Web Eyes® icons. Click on the:

• "On/Off" menu to magnify the Social Security Online text. Use the

  • A+ (Plus) icon to increase text size.
  • A- (Minus) icon to decrease text size.

• "Reader" icon to open a new Web Eyes®-enabled window with an enlarged copy of the page you wish to view.

• "Page Control" icon to open the Web Eyes® Page Control window. The Page Control window lets you enlarge the text within the open window and find your location on the page.

  Note: For easier reading, you also can change the text to column format, disable graphics, highlight information in a specific frame, etc.

• "Help" icon, to read the "Help Manual" information about Web Eyes.

Note: If the Web Eyes toolbar is not there, click "View" then select "Toolbars" and "Web Eyes" to view the toolbar.

Reminder: When you leave Social Security Online, the text enlargement continues for five minutes. When the five minutes are up, Internet Explorer goes back to your regular settings.

How to know where you are on a page

Sometimes, when you view very large text on a web page, you can lose the logical order of a document. You can keep track of where you are by opening the regular Internet Explorer browser window, and the Web Eyes® Page Control window at the same time. Then

1. Set the two windows side-by-side.

2. As you maneuver through the Web Eyes® enhanced reading window, notice how your movements through the Web Eyes® window are tracked in the Page Control window. This will help you to know where you are in the document.

If you don’t want to use two browser windows side-by-side, you can toggle between the windows using your Tab key. One window will replace the other.

Troubleshooting

If you don’t see the Web Eyes® icon on your Internet Explorer browser window, go to the top of your browser's menu bar and click on Tools.

If you see Web Eyes® in the drop down list, do the following:

1. Click on the arrow on the far right side of browser icon bar. (This arrow indicates that more icons exist outside the width of your screen.)

2. Click on "Customize."

3. Within the Customize window, re-order your icons so that the Web Eyes® icon fits onto your browser window.

If the Web Eyes® option does not appear in your Tools drop-down list, and the icon is does not show up on your browser window, you need to uninstall (remove) and then re-install Web Eyes®.

How to uninstall (remove) Web Eyes®

Use only your Control Panel “uninstall” to remove the Web Eyes® plug-in from your browser window, as follows:

1. Go to the "Start" button at the bottom left of your screen.
2. Select "Settings."
3. Open the "Control Panel."
4. Click on the folder entitled "Add/Remove Program."
5. From the small window that opens, select “Web Eyes®.”
6. Click “Uninstall.”
