During his almost 32-year career, Captain Nelson served aboard the following ships: DISCOVERER, SURVEYOR, and WESTDAHL; PIONEER as Executive Officer; and EXPLORER, and LESTER JONES as Commanding Officer. His other assignments included various types of field parties, the Washington Office in both Geodesy and Charts, the Fort Worth Regional Office, and the Pacific District Office in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time of his retirement on July 1, 1957, he was assigned to the Seattle District Office.

He is survived by one son, George.
