Mr.
Schiff: Convictions and guilty
pleas were achieved in a case where
several companies were meeting to
rig bids on California highway projects.
This was in the late 1970s and this
may surprise you, computers helped
catch the fraudulent bidders...
Mr. Marshall: "The Justice
Department asked the FBI to look into
an investigation regarding an Anti-Trust
violation."
Mr. Schiff:
Hal Marshall, a retired FBI Special
Agent...
Mr. Marshall: "What really
happened was steel, foreign steel,
was undercutting U.S. prices. Several
of these companies, we were informed,
got together and decided they would
bid, under bid, actually under bid,
foreign steel, and try to make money
that way."
Mr. Schiff: Marshall
says a large group of telephone records
had to be checked...
Mr. Marshall: "Sent these
thousands of phone bills to the brand
new, relatively new computer section
at FBI Headquarters. They then collated
all of the records and we could look
up on a certain day and see which
people, which companies, called which
other companies."
Mr. Schiff: The
FBI and other agencies worked together
investigating. I'm Neal Schiff of
the Bureau and that's the FBI's Closed
Case of the Week."
