Mr.
Schiff: There's scams of all kinds
out there. Be wary if the deal is
too good to be true. One scam defrauded
victims of thousands of dollars after
Katrina. The FBI's Internet Crime
Complaint Center investigated
Mr.
Hambrick: "The Internet Crime
Complaint Center is a public-private
alliance with the FBI and the National
White Collar Crime Center; U.S. Postal's
involved here."
Mr. Schiff: John
Hambrick. He's heads up the center,
known as IC3
Mr. Hambrick: "We receive
complaints from all over the world
and we group those complaints and
forward them to law enforcement for
investigation."
Mr. Schiff: Hambrick
says the scam had fake web sites
Mr. Hambrick: "The subjects
were actually able to collect $48,000
in the name of philanthropic relief."
Mr. Schiff: Hambrick
says the money trail was followed
Mr. Hambrick: "In this particular
case the tracking of the funds we
were assisted greatly by the financial
institutions who helped us out on
this. Nobody wants to see the bad
guys benefit from a disaster like
Hurricane Katrina."
Mr. Schiff:
You can report Internet scams at IC3.gov.
The subjects were convicted. I'm Neal
Schiff of the Bureau and that's the
FBI's Closed Case of the Week."
