Juarez escaped from Marion Correctional Institution in Ohio on April 2, 1978, after sawing through the bars and cutting a fence. Juarez has since been arrested in Texas and California, but was not identified as a prison escapee because of his use of aliases and fictitious numeric identifiers.

A federal arrest warrant was issued on February 18, 2003, by the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, after Juarez was charged with unlawful flight to avoid confinement.
