Training Courses

The NCI-Frederick Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) is required by Federal Law to provide training to all individuals working with animals. Prior to working with live animals, individuals must be listed on an investigator’s approved Animal Study Proposal and must complete the New Employee Animal Care and Use Introductory Training Course. Every three years, the ACUC office will notify individuals of their requirement to take the Refresher Animal Care and Use Training Course. The ACUC will not authorize approval of Animal Study Proposals until all training requirements have been fulfilled. Please contact ACUC Office (stahlam@mail.nih.gov) if you have any questions.

The Care and Use of Animals in Laboratory Research Training Manual
Before completing the online introductory or refresher animal care and use training courses, please review this manual for pertinent details regarding the humane care and use of animals at the NCI-Frederick. This manual provides contact information, an overview of the regulations and guidelines governing animal use, professional organizations involved in biomedical research, the Animal Care and Use Committee processes and procedures, pain and distress, euthanasia, animal heath and disease, animal holding and technical support, safety and environmental compliance, as well as occupational health. New Employees - Animal Care and Use Introductory Training Course (Online)

This course was designed to provide new employees with a basic overview of issues pertaining to the care and use of animals at the NCI-Frederick. All individuals listed on an Animal Study Proposal will be required to have taken this online training course before approval of the study will be released.

Refresher - Animal Care and Use Training Course (Online)

This course was designed to provide employees with updated information on the care and use of laboratory animals at the NCI-Frederick. Once individuals have completed the introductory online training course, the Animal Care and Use Committee requires the completion of this refresher course every three years to keep animal users abreast of current topics, guidelines, and regulations.

NCI-Frederick Animal Care and Use Committee Member Training

This course was designed to provide new ACUC members with an understanding of the role of the Committee and their responsibilities.

MOUSE 101: Introduction to Using the Mouse as a Research Model at NCI

This lecture series was designed to provide investigators with pertinent information related to the use of mouse models in biomedical research at the National Cancer Institute.
