As the world's largest volume-buyer of energy-related products, the federal government can reduce energy consumption and achieve enormous cost savings by purchasing energy-efficient products. Federal buyers are now required by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to purchase products that are ENERGY STAR®-qualified or FEMP-designated. (These products are in the upper 25% of energy efficiency in their class.) The purchasing requirements are codified by FAR Part 23. In addition, Executive Order 13221 requires that federal agencies purchase products with low standby power.

FEMP helps federal purchasers identify these types of highly efficient products. A list of the all of the ENERGY STAR-qualified or FEMP-designated products is available for download (PDF 98 KB). Read our fact sheet to learn more about FEMP's activities (PDF 251 KB). Download Adobe Reader.

Purchasing "green" products helps to reduce our impact on the environment. The Office of the Federal Environmental Executive (OFEE) provides links to green purchasing information.

Companies selling energy-efficient and green products and services have a special opportunity in the federal sector. Federal agencies spend at least $10 billion per year on purchases of energy-using products. Basic information on how to do business with the federal government is offered in the publications Selling Energy-Efficient Products to the Federal Government (PDF 814 KB) and Federal Procurement Opportunities for "Green" Vendors (PDF 1 MB).
