The DEA record layout has changed.

March 18, 2008

Dear Subscriber,

This letter is to advise you that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is changing the record layout for the DEA CSA database by adding a field for the Payment Indicator.

This new record layout will be in effect Monday, May 5, 2008.

DEA has also added a new business activity code C5. This business activity code is for military practitioners that provide narcotic addiction treatment to military personnel.

Explanation of the Payment Indicator

P = Paid. Every person (institution or an individual) who manufactures, distributes, dispenses, imports, or exports any controlled substance or who proposes to engage in these activities must pay an application fee to obtain a DEA registration certificate. This also applies to every person who proposes to, or who engages in the distribution, importation, or exportation of any List I chemical. The "P" indicates that a fee was paid.

E = Exempt. Any hospital or institution operated by an agency of the United States, of any State, or of any political subdivision or agency thereof is exempt from paying a registration application fee. Likewise any individual practitioner who is an official of an agency of the United States, of any State, or of any political subdivision or agency thereof is exempt from paying an application fee. The exemption for an individual practitioner applies only while that practitioner is an official of an exempt institution. Upon leaving an exempt institution and entering private practice, the practitioner must obtain, and pay for, a new DEA registration. The "E" indicates that a DEA registration is fee exempt.

Please visit our web page at http://www.ntis.gov/products/dea.aspx to download the new Record Layout; or you may contact Eulene Orr at eorr@ntis.gov, and the layout will be e-mailed to you.

Test data can be found at https://dea.ntis.gov/notice.html.

Sincerely,
