Program Description:
The Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Oncology (EPEC™-O) Curriculum contained on this CD-Rom is a comprehensive curriculum in palliative and end-of-life care developed specifically for clinicians caring for persons with cancer. The curriculum, divided into 3 plenary sessions, 15 content modules, and 2 teaching skills modules, has a dual purpose:

  • To provide the practicing clinician with information and strategies necessary to provide palliative interventions to his/her patients.
  • To provide educational tools and materials to use in teaching the core competencies of palliative care to trainees.

The EPEC™-O curriculum was initially produced by the EPEC™ Project at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, with major funding provided by the National Cancer Institute and supplemental funding provided by the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Oncology Nursing Society provide partnership support in dissemination of the EPEC™-O curriculum.

CME Accreditation:
The American Society of Clinical Oncology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Clinical Oncology designates this educational activity for a maximum of 32.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of participation in the activity. The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (provider number CEP7976) as a provider for continuing education for nurses. This educational activity is approved for a maximum of 31 nursing contact hours. Instructions and applications for obtaining credits are available on the CD-ROM.

Learning Objectives:
After completing the EPEC™-O Curriculum on this CD-Rom, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the scope of knowledge, attitudes, and skills that comprise the core palliative care competencies needed throughout the course of comprehensive cancer care.
  • Incorporate the described treatment recommendations and approaches into clinical practice.

The learner may choose to complete the entire CD-Rom or only those modules of particular interest at his/her own pace.

Target Audience:
This CD-Rom is designed for:

  • Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, particularly those working in the fields of oncology, hospice and palliative medicine, family medicine, general medicine, and geriatrics
  • Fellowship program directors in oncology, palliative medicine, geriatrics, and program directors of family practice residencies
  • Oncology nurses, oncology social workers, palliative care nurses, and therapists treating patients with cancer.
  • Palliative care and hospice programs.

Method of Instruction and Participation
The plenary sessions and modules consist of lecture text with associated slides, video vignettes, and commentary. After completing the modules, the clinician will respond to questions about the content of the activity and complete an evaluation.
