In Brief…

FOCUS Newsletter. The Asphalt Technical Working Group met in Washington, D.C., in May. Topics on the agenda included the low-temperature algorithm for Superpave binders, N-design for the Superpave gyratory compactor, Superpave software, and training and technical assistance for users of the Superpave system.

The Construction Innovation Forum has bestowed a NOVA Award for the Norcure electrochemical chloride extraction system. The award recognizes innovative solutions, processes, or products that improve the quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of construction. The Norcure system, studied as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program, involves removing salt (chloride ions) from concrete structures. The process stops the corrosion of the reinforcing steel and extends the structure's service life. For more information, contact Donald Jackson at FHWA (telephone: 202-366-6770; fax: 202-366-7909).

The Forum of European Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) has established a Working Party on SHRP Implementation. FEHRL is interested in representation on U.S. technical working groups on SHRP implementation to enhance communication and coordination. To further improve communications between U.S. and European highway agencies, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) has invited FEHRL to nominate a liaison member to the TRB-Strategic Highway Research Program Committee and the TRB-Long Term Pavement Performance Committee.

FHWA plans to host an international conference on the Superpave system in fall 1997. The conference is tentatively scheduled to be held in Austin, TX.
