THE DETAILS SURROUNDING THE CRIME

On June 29, 2006, at approximately 4:40 a.m., Officers Mark Ayers and Douglas Stanek, Olive Branch, Mississippi Police Department, were patrolling the Olive Branch area when they stopped to check on a suspicious vehicle. When Officer Stanek approached the vehicle and began to converse with the driver, the driver, a black male, allegedly shot Officer Stanek in the upper chest with a 9 millimeter handgun. After shooting Officer Stanek, the driver stepped out of the vehicle and allegedly shot Officer Ayers in the upper torso. Officer Ayers was approaching the suspect vehicle at the time that he was shot. The driver then got back into his vehicle and drove off as Officer Stanek returned fire shattering the back glass of the vehicle. The suspect may not have been injured. The vehicle, which was determined to have been stolen, was abandoned approximately a quarter of a mile from the scene of the shooting. The officers were taken to an area hospital for treatment. One officer has made a full recovery and the other officer sustained permanent injuries from the shootings.
