National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

National Ocean Service (NOS)

  • Coastal Services Center - Fosters and sustains the environmental and economic well-being of the coast by linking people, information, and technology.
  • National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science - Provides coastal managers with scientific understanding and tools needed to balance NOAA's environmental, social, and economic goals.
  • National Geodetic Survey - Delivers and evolves the Nation's foundation of reference for latitude, longitude, height, velocity, shoreline, and gravity throughout the United States with consistency, accuracy, timeliness, currency, and easy access to support public safety, coastal stewardship, economic prosperity, and environmental well-being.
  • National Marine Sanctuaries - Serves as the trustee for the nation's system of marine protected areas, to conserve, protect, and enhance their biodiversity, ecological integrity and cultural legacy.
  • Office Coast Survey - Provides a national suite of nautical charting products, services, and base data sets for marine navigation and coastal stewardship.
  • Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management - Provides effective management of multiple uses of the nation's coastal and ocean resources: protects and conservesg specially designated areas; works with partners at all levels; balancing economic, environmental, and cultural activities; adapts the system to changing conditions and needs; enables others to practice coastal stewardship; and promotes science-based resource management decisions.
  • Office of Response and Restoration - Protects and restores coastal resources by responding to environmental threats through the application of science and technology.

National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)

Provides and ensures timely access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation's economy, security, environment, and quality of life. To fulfill its responsibilities, NESDIS acquires and manages the Nation's operational environmental satellites, provides data and information services, and conducts related research.

National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)

Rebuild and maintain sustainable fisheries; promote the recovery of protected species; protect and maintain the health of coastal marine habitats.

National Weather Service (NWS)

Provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community.

Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR)

Conducts research, develops products, and provides scientific information and leadership toward fostering NOAA's evolving environmental and economic mission.
