Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy

The United States has launched a government-wide effort to curb IP crime and strengthen IP enforcement both here at home and overseas. The USPTO and other sections of the Department of Commerce have joined with government agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to devise and execute an integrated strategy against IP crime. This initiative is called the Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP!).

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is an international organization dedicated to helping to ensure that the rights of creators and owners of intellectual property are protected worldwide and that inventors and authors are, thus, recognized and rewarded for their ingenuity. The number of member States belonging to WIPO now stands at 182, over 90 per cent of the world's countries - a reflection of the crucial importance and relevance attached to the work of the Organization.

The US Department of Commerce focuses on promoting American business at home and abroad. The Department gathers vast quantities of economic and demographic data to measure the health and vitality of the economy, promotes U.S. exports, enforces international trade agreements, regulates the export of sensitive goods and technologies, issues patents and trademarks, protects intellectual property, develops and applies technology, measurements and standards, formulates telecommunications and technology policy, fosters minority business development and promotes economic growth in distressed communities.
