From: Sgoochs@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 6:23 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 To Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this letter is to express my deep concern over the need for labeling requirements on genetically modified foods. Bio-engineers have begun creating hundred of new GE crops, oblivious to human and environmental hazards, or negative socioeconomic impacts on the world's several billion farmers and rural villagers. An increasing number of scientists have warned that current gene-splicing techniques are crude, inexact, and unpredictable -- and therefore inherently dangerous. Genetic engineering of food and fiber products is inherently unpredictable and dangerous -- for humans, for animals, the environment, and for the future of sustainable and organic agriculture. Genetically engineered products clearly have the potential to be toxic and a threat to human health. For this reason, the public deserves to be informed -- particularly by means of appropriate labeling -- that the food they purchase for consumption is a potential health risk. Sincerely, Sandra V.
