From: SandyLej@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 6:17 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: labelling of genetically engineered foods Dear FDA Officials: I strongly urge the FDA to take the following actions on behalf of the consumers of the United States whose safety and health you have been entrusted to safeguard. 1) The FDA must require mandatory pre-market comprehensive environmental review of the effects of genetically modified organisms. 2) The FDA must require mandatory pre-market long-term health testing of all genetically modified foods. 3) The FDA must require mandatory labeling of GE products. Without mandatory labeling, neither consumers nor health professionals will know if an allergic or toxic reaction was the result of a genetically engineered food. Consumers would be deprived of the critical knowledge needed to hold food producers liable should any of these novel products be hazardous. 4) The FDA must end its cozy relationship with the industries it purports to be regulating. Specifically, no person should be allowed to work for a biotech company, then work for the FDA writing the regulatory rules on that company's product, then go back to work for the same biotech company, as has been documented in the past. Thank you very much for your attention to this letter. I look forward to your honest efforts on behalf of America's consumers. Sincerely, Sandy Lejeune 4563 Atascadero Drive Santa Barbara, CA 93110
