Finland has specified the use of ASTM International standard E2187, Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes, in a new regulatory proposal designed to prevent accidental death and property damage related to untended cigarettes. Annually, more than 700 fires in Finland are attributed to cigarettes. ASTM E2187, developed by Committee E05 on Fire Standards, is used to test the ignition performance of cigarettes and has been cited in legislation that has been passed in 37 U.S. States, as well as Canada.
