The Casablanca American School, founded in 1973, is an independent, coeducational day school which offers a U.S. and International Baccalaureate-oriented education from nursery through grade 12. The school year is divided into 3 trimesters that extend from early September through mid-June.
Organization: The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors and one representative of the U.S. Consulate General. The Board is responsible to the Casablanca American School Association, which is comprised of all CAS parents and teachers.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. and international private university-preparatory schools. Instruction is in English. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is offered in grades 11 and 12. Specialist subjects include art, computer, health, music and physical education. French and Arabic are mandatory second languages in grades 2-10. Computers are available in the upper school and lower school labs as well as in the library and some classrooms. After-school sports, such as track and swimming, are conducted at local facilities. Soccer, volleyball, basketball, and other team sports are offered at the School. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Faculty: In the 2007-2008 school year, there are 61 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members. The School also has 18 teaching support staff and 5 teaching interns.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 546 (N-grade 5: 304; and grades 6-12: 242).
Facilities: The physical plant, built in 1989 with an extension completed in 2002, is approximately 11,800+m2 covered and is situated on a 20,000m2 parcel of land in a residential area 9 kilometers from the city's center. The facility includes a preschool with 6 classrooms and an administration building with a reception area, a 2-level library, a staff common room, and offices. The Randolph Building consists of 27 classrooms; a multipurpose room; an art studio; a computer laboratory; and chemistry, physics, and biology laboratories. The new building, inaugurated in June 2002, consists of 12 classrooms, an art studio, a computer laboratory, a science laboratory, a library, 2 music/performance rooms, the Anne Healy Osman Theatre with 350 seats, administrative offices, a conference room, and a staff common room. Facilities also include a gymnasium, an outdoor multiuse hard court, a kitchen, a cafeteria, an infirmary, and a sports field.
Finances: In the 2007-2008 school year, about 97% of the School's income derives from tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: N-Kdg.: $4,728; Pre1-grade 5: $9,848; and grades 6-12: $11,516. The School also charges a one-time admission fee of $1,120, an application/examination fee of $85, a capital levy/building fee of $560, a registration fee of $85, a sports fee of actual cost, a PTA fee of $22, and a transportation fee where applicable. These fees are payable in Moroccan dirhams or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
