Surveyor
Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship SURVEYOR. In service 1917 - 1956. Pacific service

Steamer, first oil-burning steamer of C&GS fleet, length 186 feet, beam 34.3 feet, draft 12 feet. Built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Drydock, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1917 at a cost of $236,000. In service 1917-1956 in Pacific except first two years when the ship was turned over to the Navy for convoy duty out of Gibraltar.

After returning to the United States in 1919, the SURVEYOR was returned to the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey and proceeded to the West Coast via the Panama Canal. For the next 36 years the SURVEYOR worked in the waters of the North Pacific and Bering Sea. During World War II it conducted defense related surveys in Aleutian waters. This vessel is commemorated by the naming a bay in Alaskan waters Surveyor Bay.
