Diesel,
length 68 feet, beam 16.6 feet, draft 5.5 feet. Built in 1930 by Hoggson
Brothers at Booth Bay, Maine. In service 1945-1961 on Atlantic and
Gulf Coast. The Sosbee was used as a test platform for various types
of electronic navigation and other hydrographic equipment for a number
of years. Named for Lt.(j.g.) Joseph D. Sosbee, United States Coast
and Geodetic Survey, who lost his life July 18, 1943, in the crash
of a Coast Guard PBY-5A on Mount Moffat, Adak, Aleutian Islands. Lt.
(j.g.) Sosbee was the head of a photogrammetric mission utilizing
the C&GS nine-lens camera for defense related work in the Aleutians
at that time.
