Steamer,
length 180.4 feet, beam 24.8 feet, draft 11.7 feet. Possibly bought
from Boston sugar dealer John Spaulding as he had a yacht named “ISIS”
in the early 1900’s. This was possibly the most beautiful ship
ever operated by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Ernest Lester Jones
used it to ferry dignitaries about as well as for survey work. It
served from 1917-1919 in the Navy during World War I. It was lost
in 1920 on the Florida coast as the result of striking a submerged
obstruction during hydrographic surveys. In service 1915-1920 on Atlantic
coast except Navy time. Named for the Egyptian goddess Isis, variously
described as goddess of Earth, Moon, Sky, fertility, and motherhood.
