Coast
and Geodetic Survey Ship GILBERT. The GILBERT was named for
C&GS Captain John J. Gilbert who served 57 years with the
Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Launch,
diesel. Length 77.5 feet, beam 16.5 feet, draft 7.5 feet. Built by
Latham D. Smith at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in 1929. In service 1930-1962
on Atlantic coast. Named for Coast and Geodetic Survey Captain John
Jacob Gilbert (1845-1929), who served on the Coast and Geodetic Survey
from 1864-1921. Captain Gilbert commanded the old PATHFINDER when
it sailed through the Straits of Magellan to Seattle and thence to
its first work in Alaska in 1899. The PATHFINDER was then ordered
directly to the Philippine Islands from its Alaska working grounds
and sailed from Dutch Harbor to Manila. He was also Chief of Hydrographic
Operations and Vessel operations.
