diesel, length 133 feet, beam 32 feet, draft 8 feet. Built by Zigler
Shipyards, Inc., in Jennings, Louisiana, in 1968, for the Coast and
Geodetic Survey. This vessel was originally meant to replace the C&GS
Ship MARMER conducting current surveys in various harbors and waterways
along the East and Gulf Coasts but during the 1970’s became
the primary platform for the NOAA Status and Trends Program and other
environmental monitoring programs. In service 1968-2002, replaced
by NOAA Ship NANCY FOSTER. The FERREL was named for William Ferrel
(1817-1891) who conducted tidal and atmospheric researches for the
Coast Survey and for the early Weather Bureau. He is known as one
of the founders of the science of geophysical fluid dynamics.
