Bear Creek Dam Seepage Continues, Reservoir Level Held at Lower Level
April 28, 2005
RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. – TVA will hold Bear Creek Reservoir at a lower-than-
normal level this summer because of continued seepage through a section
of the earthen dam.
TVA began refilling the reservoir several weeks ago to determine the
effectiveness of repairs made during the winter to address the seepage problem.
Although the extent and volume of seepage was reduced, excessive seepage
continues to occur in one area of the dam.
To limit seepage and reduce potential damage to the dam, TVA will hold
Bear Creek Reservoir at elevation 568 feet, eight feet below the normal summer
pool elevation of 576 feet, indefinitely. TVA will conduct additional engineering
studies and monitor the seepage to identify long-term trends. The results will be
used to determine the next steps.
If the reservoir is expected to exceed an elevation of 576 feet as a result
of heavy rainfall, TVA will notify local authorities and closely monitor the situation.
TVA also will have equipment and materials on hand for emergency repairs
should a sinkhole or other problems develop.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely selffinanced.
TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that
serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA
also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple
benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and
recreation.
