Chemical Reactivity Hazards:
Laboratory and Pilot Scale Recognition and Control Workshop

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Chemical Health and Safety developed the Chemical Reactivity Hazards: Laboratory and Pilot Scale Recognition and Control Workshop through the OSHA and Process Safety Alliance. The workshop provides participants with the knowledge and skill to screen processes for potential hazards, recognize when reactive hazards are present, and implement appropriate controls to reduce the risk of an incident associated with chemical reactivity hazards in laboratories and pilot plants. Workshop attendees review case studies of actual incidents and do screening examples in order to understand the screening and recognition process. During the workshop, group discussions of control methods allow participants to share their experiences and to evaluate methods for controlling reactivity risks.

This workshop draws heavily on the Managing Chemical Reactivity Hazards: A Workshop for Non-Chemists workshop which was developed by the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) for the OSHA and Chemical Reactivity Hazards Management Alliance.

ACS representative, Neal Langerman, Ph.D., Advanced Chemical Safety, is presenting the following Chemical Reactivity Hazards: Laboratory and Pilot Scale Recognition and Control workshops throughout the United States during 2008:
  • August 16, 2008: ACS Fall 2008 National Meeting & Exposition, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • July 2, 2008: ACS 37th Northeast Regional Meeting, Burlington, Vermont.
  • May 13, 2008: OSHA Region X Training Center, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington.
  • April 30-May 1, 2008: Safety Partners, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts.
  • April 5, 2008: ACS Spring 2008 National Meeting & Exposition, New Orleans, Louisiana.
